 What it is

The Marcive Database is the online version of
GPO's Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications from 1976 to the present. Princeton has many of the items listed here, and we can get the others.

 How To Access  Basic Searching
  • TO LOOK FOR TITLES
    Using TITLE WORDS:
    Select Search type Keyword and Search Index Title,
    with key words from the title, e.g. nih contracts fin t alligator

    Using TITLE PHRASE
    Select Search type browse and Search Index Title
    with the title from the beginning, e.g. nih
    nih guide
    OK to stop in the middle of the title
  • TO LOOK FOR ISSUING AGENCIES
    Select Search Type Keyword and Search Index Author with words from the agency name, e.g. national arthritis
    or, use Search type browse and Search Index Authorwith the full agency name,
    e.g. national instutute of arthritis
  • TO LOOK FOR PERSONAL NAMES
    Select Search Type Keyword and Search Index Author
    with the author's last and first names, e.g. jones albert
    or, use Search type browse and Search Index Author
    with the last name and first initial,
    e.g. jones, a
  • TO LOOK FOR SUBJECT HEADINGS
    Select Search Type subject and Search Index Author
    with a subject word joints
    or, use Search type browse and Search Index Subject with a subject phrase,
    e.g. joints--diseases
    the subject headings are not assigned very consistently; it is usually better to do a combined search using titles and subject words.
  • TO LOOK FOR SUDOC NUMBERS
    use Search Type browse and select the sudocsa numerical index, e.g. A 13.112
    include punctuation or replace it by spaces
 Seeing Results
  • TO DISPLAY RESULTS
    Display formats:
    Browse Display records in briefest one-line format dis 1-60 rec
    full Display records in detailed format
    brief Display records in brief format
  • TO QUIT
    return to start by using the home browser button.
 To see if Princeton has the item

Click the holdings button
  • IF PRINCETON RECEIVES IT
    if Princeton receives the item, you will see the line
    This item is selected by Your library
    This does not necessarily mean that all parts will be present; some sets are incomplete.

    To get documents received AFTER 1979, note TITLE, ITEM number and SUDOC number then ask at the reference desk in SSRC (Firestone, A floor) to get the item.
    For biological subject matter, the items might be in SSRC, or it might be at SZ (or SPR, etc.)
    first check in our spreadsheet of documents,
    (For all locations, this is authoritatively shown only in the card files at SSRC)
    Some serial titles are listed in the printed Biology Serials List at the Front Desk under the series name

    Also consider checking in the Online Catalog;
    a few documents after 1979 and many earlier ones have been cataloged

    For documents received BEFORE 1980, also use the Supplementary Catalog to locate the items
    The only good access point here is the name of the issuing agency.
    They will be in Firestone or the Annex, specified by call number
  • IF PRINCETON DOES NOT RECEIVE IT
    note TITLE, ITEM number and SUDOC number

    Items which Princeton does not own are available through Interlibrary Loan /Document Delivery
 Advanced Searching
  • Combined Searches
    Use the Combined search button
    Fill in the information lines that you know
    This search automatically does a Boolean AND operation.
    There is no direct way to do an Boolean OR operation; instead, to search for several related words use truncation, e.g. chromatog*; to search for a word in any of sevveral fields, enter it in the Anyword field.
  • TO LIMIT
      You can limit by date, language, or format
      To limit by date, enter the year or year range wanted in the date field, e.g.
      1995
      1990-1995
      AFTER 1995
      BEFORE 1900
    To limit by language, enter the three-letter code for the language in the language field. Find the code by using the browse language button.

    To limit by format, enter the code for the format in the format field. Find the code by using the browse format button,
  • the help button gives useful information at any point.
